What genetic counseling services do you provide before testing?

Pre-test counseling includes family history analysis, risk assessment, testing option review, and informed consent discussions. Our genetic counselors ensure patients understand potential outcomes and implications before proceeding with any genetic testing procedures.

How do you protect the privacy of genetic information?

Our facility maintains strict genetic information security protocols including restricted access, encrypted data storage, and special consent requirements. Patients control result disclosure and can limit information sharing within their medical records.

Should my family members get genetic testing if I have positive results?

Family cascade testing depends on inheritance patterns and individual circumstances. Dr. Don Pham provides specific recommendations for family member testing based on genetic findings and family structure. We offer direct counseling services for interested family members.

What happens if my genetic test finds a variant of uncertain significance?

Variants of uncertain significance require careful interpretation and ongoing monitoring. Our genetic counselors explain current research efforts and potential for future reclassification. Surveillance recommendations depend on family history and clinical findings rather than uncertain genetic variants.

Can genetic testing tell me if I will definitely develop a disease?

Genetic testing provides probability estimates rather than definitive predictions. Positive results indicate increased risk but do not guarantee disease development. Many genetic conditions show incomplete penetrance, meaning not everyone with pathogenic variants develops symptoms.

Does insurance cover genetic testing at your Pompano Beach facility?

Insurance coverage varies by policy and clinical indications. Our staff verifies benefits and obtains prior authorizations when required. Many tests are covered when medical necessity criteria are met, though some cosmetic or wellness testing may require self-payment.

How long does genetic testing take to get results?

Most genetic tests require 2-8 weeks depending on test complexity. Single gene tests typically take 2-3 weeks, while comprehensive panels and whole exome sequencing may require 6-8 weeks. Our laboratory provides regular updates on testing progress and expected completion dates.
